Gas Works Park has a play area with a large play barn, and big hill popular for flying kites. Special park features include a sundial, and a beautiful view of Seattle.
Burke-Gilman Trail runs past Gas Works parking lot and follows the Burlington-Northern Railroad 12.5 miles north to Kirkland Log Boom Park.
“A truly original park born out of a brown field — a former coal gasification plant — that artistically incorporates remnants of the site’s industrial past. Landscape architect Richard Haag has won multiple awards for the design,” Somerville says. The former boiler house is now a picnic shelter, and the exhauster-compressor building has been converted to a children’s play barn in this unusual park with spectacular views of downtown Seattle. The park also is a favorite place to fly kites. 206-684-4075; seattle.gov/parks/park_detail.asp?ID=293
