USA Sherpa

ladyliberty.jpgThe historic Lady Liberty has been closed after some terrorist attacks. But after a 420  million worth of remodeling the building to make sure it is fire safe, it has been opened to the general public in August 2004.

Now the visitors coming up the Lady Liberty have been limited and although the statue’s base, pedestal and lower observation deck can be visited, the the crown and its interior observation deck at 265 feet above the city of New York remained closed to the public for the reason that, in case of extreme emergency, the top portion will be a difficult place to evacuate the public.

The House recently agreed to provide $1 million to help fund the restructuring and making sure our Lady Liberty is safe to visit once again.  “The Statue’s designer, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, never intended visitors to ascend to the crown,” Boch said.

The crown is the only National Park Service site that hasn’t reopened since the Sept. 11 attacks but was promised to be open once again in the near future.
